My doctor prescribed nortriptyline stating that it does help some patients eliminate or reduce tinnitus significantly. Nortriptyline, sold under the brand names Allegron, Aventyl, Noritren, Nortrilen, and Pamelor among others, is a tricyclic antidepressant (TCA) used to treat clinical depression. Nortriptyline belongs to the older generation of SSRIs. Another licensed use for it is in the treatment of childhood bedwetting. Meds for depression and anxiety: sertroline and citalipram ineffective, prozac (fluoxetine) gives night sweats and anxiety. Pamelor (nortriptyline): In selected cases, tricyclic antidepressants can work for ha's., such as Elavil or pamelor (nortriptyline). However, it is widely known to be more effective (for reasons unknown) than newer SSRIs at lessening tinnitus. It is not prescribed very much anymore because it tends to have more side effects than newer SSRIs.

I notice that some of the later posts recommend Nortriptyline to help reduce tinnitus noise but I have seperately read it can also increase tinnitus noise but is weight netural. While these reviews might be helpful, they are not a substitute for the expertise, knowledge and judgement of healthcare practitioners. I know all medicines have thier own side effects and even the Amitriptyline leaflet says it can cause tinnitus. I am fearful to take the medication, because one of the side effects is ringing in the ears.
